The Los Angeles & Orange County Audio Society is excited to announce an exclusive behind the scenes look at one of LA’s most vibrant jazz clubs, Sam First Jazz Club and Bar near LAX (6171 W. Century Blvd. #180, Los Angeles). The club hosts live jazz concerts five nights per week and most are recorded. Many are turned into limited edition LP pressings and digital downloads for sale through Sam First Records (https://samfirstrecords.com) and other outlets such as AudiophileUSA https://www.audiophileusa.com.

Reservations Required:

Because of the size of the facility attendance is limited to 40 people, so we are asking you to make a reservation to attend by February 25. Please do not reserve unless you are serious about attending. To get your name on the list email mikew.laocas@gmail.com using “Sam First Event” on the subject line. You will receive a confirmation on or before February 26. Lifetime members will receive priority for attendance if we become oversubscribed.

The bar will be open during the Society event if you would like to buy drinks. Some bar snacks may also be available but otherwise no food is being provided. All attendees must be 21+.

Metered parking is available on surrounding streets and a reduced rate for Sam First customers is available at Joe’s AutoParks at 6151 W Century Blvd at $6.25 for the first three hours ($3/half hour thereafter).

If you would like to stay for either the 7:30 or 9:30 pm shows by the Anthony Wilson Nonet you can buy tickets directly from the club at https://www.samfirstbar.com/events/anthony-wilson-nonet-2. It is expected the shows will sell out so don’t wait too long to purchase.

This is a free event to LAOCAS Members and the public. Registration is required and a Zoom meeting link will be provided in your registration confirmation email.

A Legacy in Sound
Tom Fine is a respected audio engineer and contributing editor for Stereophile. Born into a family deeply rooted in the audio industry, Tom is the son of renowned recording engineer Bob Fine and legendary record company executive and producer Wilma Cozart Fine, both of whom played pivotal roles in the golden era of Mercury Living Presence classical recordings.

Growing up surrounded by music and sound engineering, Tom developed a passion for both the technical and artistic aspects of audio reproduction. He has contributed insightful reviews and articles to a variety of publications and online forums, where his expertise and historical perspective are highly valued. Known for his meticulous approach, Tom brings both a listener’s ear and an engineer’s knowledge to his analyses, often referencing the rich legacy of his parents’ pioneering work. Tom also owns an audio transfer and mastering studio. Current clients include the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has remastered and/or re-authored for CD most of the Mercury Living Presence catalog, returning the majority of it to original LP sequences and cover art, and making it available on all major streaming platforms, globally.

Tom will talk to the Society about the role of the reviewer in today’s audio reality. He will also answer questions from attendees.
