With 60 years in the recording business, Bill Schnee was the Winner of the LAOCAS 2024 Innovation Award. Known as an engineer’s engineer, his recording projects bring analog warmth and digital precision into seamless alignment. His sessions reflect obsessive attention to detail, including transient response, phase coherence, and spectral balance, creating mixes celebrated for their imaging accuracy and dynamic integrity.

In high-end playback environments, Bill applies his studio acumen to loudspeaker voicing, DSP calibration, and room acoustics—translating engineering into emotional immersion. His work bridges the gap between microphone and monitor, guiding audiophiles toward truly revelatory listening experiences.

He was instrumental in pioneering direct-to-disc audiophile recordings with Sheffield Lab Records, notably engineering The Missing Linc by Lincoln Mayorga & Distinguished Colleagues in 1973. In 1975, he produced and engineered the Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker direct-to-disc which a few months ago was entered into the National Recording Registry as a recording deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress. His meticulous approach to sound and dedication to analog purity has consistently earned him widespread acclaim. Schnee has recorded or mixed dozens of Grammy nominated and winning albums, and has been personally nominated 11 times in the Best Engineered Grammy category, winning twice for Steely Dan’s “Aja” (1977) and “Gaucho” (1981).

In 1981, he founded Schnee Studio in North Hollywood, designing and building all the equipment, including a discrete recording console and tube gear to achieve his signature sound. His studio became a haven for artists seeking warmth, clarity, and musicality in their recordings.

Schnee’s discography spans decades and genres, including collaborations with Three Dog Night, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Huey Lewis, Pablo Cruise, Steely Dan, The Jacksons, Marvin Gaye, Boz Scaggs, Miles Davis, Whitney Houston, Dire Straits, Ringo (with all the Beatles), Carly Simon, and The Pointer Sisters. His productions are known for their immediacy, depth, and emotional resonance—qualities that have made him a revered figure in the recording world.

Beyond technical mastery, Schnee champions the philosophy of “serving the music,” ensuring that every mix enhances the artist’s vision. His legacy continues to inspire engineers and producers striving for excellence in audio.

A Legacy in Sound
Tom Fine is a respected audio engineer and contributing editor for Stereophile. Born into a family deeply rooted in the audio industry, Tom is the son of renowned recording engineer Bob Fine and legendary record company executive and producer Wilma Cozart Fine, both of whom played pivotal roles in the golden era of Mercury Living Presence classical recordings.

Growing up surrounded by music and sound engineering, Tom developed a passion for both the technical and artistic aspects of audio reproduction. He has contributed insightful reviews and articles to a variety of publications and online forums, where his expertise and historical perspective are highly valued. Known for his meticulous approach, Tom brings both a listener’s ear and an engineer’s knowledge to his analyses, often referencing the rich legacy of his parents’ pioneering work. Tom also owns an audio transfer and mastering studio. Current clients include the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has remastered and/or re-authored for CD most of the Mercury Living Presence catalog, returning the majority of it to original LP sequences and cover art, and making it available on all major streaming platforms, globally.

Tom will talk to the Society about the history of Mercury Living Presence and its place in the new streaming-centric world. He will also answer questions from attendees.

Bill Low is the founder and CEO of AudioQuest, the cables business he started in 1978, and the company he founded in 1980. AudioQuest is known for its high-quality audio cables and accessories.
With a deep-rooted passion for music and sound, Bill continues to spend his life enhancing the listening experience for audiophiles and casual listeners alike. He began his journey in the audio industry in the 1970s, quickly learning that the scale of possible audio quality was much greater than he had known as an outsider. He acted – a pertinent example was his small store in Portland, OR becoming the largest Linn Sondek dealer in the US in 1975.
Under Bill’s leadership, AudioQuest has become a leader in audio technology, known for its innovative products that push the boundaries of sound quality. He has been instrumental in developing advanced cable technologies, utilizing premium materials to ensure optimal performance. Throughout his career, Bill has emphasized the significance of education in the audio field, often sharing his knowledge through seminars and workshops and now using Zoom to collaborate with another well-known leader in the field, George Cardas

George Cardas is the founder and chief designer of Cardas Audio, a pioneering company in high-end audio cables and components. With a background as a telecommunications engineer, Cardas launched Cardas Audio in 1987 in Ontario, California, driven by his passion for music and his expertise in signal transmission.
He revolutionized audio cable design by applying the Golden Ratio to conductor geometry, minimizing resonance and distortion—an innovation that earned him a U.S. patent and set a new industry standard. George also developed a unique proprietary process for purifying metals during the drawing process that yielded ultra pure metals ideal for the transmission of audio signals— because in the “eighties” the availability of such materials was being controlled and exploited by a small group of foreign suppliers George decided that he should share his materials with his fellow manufacturers namely Bill Low.
In the early days, he and his family hand-assembled cables in their garage before moving the business to Bandon, Oregon, where it remains a major local employer. Today, while his daughter Angela manages operations, George continues to lead product development, maintaining his legacy as an influential figure in audiophile engineering.
