May Event

Zoom – Zoom – Zoom

Sunday May 7       2-4 PM PDT

A visit with Impex Records

At the beginning of the pandemic, guitar maestro Al Di Meola discovered the lost stash of 2” analog recording tapes of Saturday Night in San Francisco. Two historic concerts with fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucia, recorded at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco, December 6, 1980. The tapes were in poor condition and would need significant work to be useful, but Di Meola remembered how amazing the performance on that Saturday night in San Francisco was and committed himself to bringing this music out to the public.

Join Impex Records Founder Abey Fonn, Chuck Granata, co-producer and editing and mix engineer Roy Hendrickson for a comprehensive break down of the discovery, restoration, mixing, mastering, and production of 2022’s premiere audiophile vinyl release, Saturday Night in San Francisco.

How did Impex navigate the various, sometimes competing, interests to deliver the artist’s vision, the label’s licensing requirements, and an audiophile label’s need for absolute sonic excellence?

  1. Why does the EU LP from EAR sound different?
  2. The difficult, but necessary decision by Impex to make a DXD transfer of the tapes in order to create the best possible version(s) of the record?
  3. What was Roy Hendrickson’s process for restoring, editing, mixing, and outputting the final mix?
  4. Final analog mastering with Bernie Grundman
  5. The importance of test pressing analysis and strict quality control

This is a rare opportunity to learn many of the “nuts and bolts” of bringing an important—and largely forgotten—recording of an historic concert to life.
