John Atkinson is a renowned audio journalist and engineer who served as the editor of Stereophile magazine for more than three decades. He joined the magazine in May 1986 and stepped down from his position in March 2019, becoming Stereophile’s technical editor. Previously he was the editor-in-chief of the British Hi-Fi News and Record Review.

He is widely respected for his extensive and rigorous loudspeaker measurements, which form a valuable database for comparing different speakers.. He has and continues to write articles and reviews on various aspects of audio technology and music reproduction. A longstanding member of the Audio Engineering Society, in 2011 John accepted an invitation from the Technical Council of the AES to present the prestigious Richard C. Heyser Memorial Lecture at its 131st Convention in New York. In addition to his editing and testing achievements, John has produced, engineered, mastered, or played on more than 40 commercially released recordings. His part in engineering and mastering the Portland State Chamber Choir’s Translations (Naxos) helped make the album a Gramophone magazine Critic’s Choice in 2020.

John is also the most recent recipient of the Los Angeles and Orange County Audio Society’s Founder’s Award which is the highest honor bestowed by the Society.  The Founder’s Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of audio and audiophile enjoyment worldwide.

I’ve built loudspeakers and gear since my youth, starting with large party equipment, that we drove to various places for “disco-events”.

Meanwhile education as MD and as airline pilot.

Music is a passion for me, I enjoy playing the bass with friends in a local jazz combo.

After intensive search for a new replay system, I luckily stumbled upon the Linkwitzlab.com website. Without ever listening to these designs, ordering Construction Plans and an expensive quality set of drivers for ORIONs.

At the advent of LX521 in 2012, I happened to complete the first customer LX521. This was followed by many requests from other LINKWITZ afficionados, to provide the beautifully mitered LX521 baffle.
With SLs approval, we started shipping flatpacks of the LX521. From then on, and in cooperation with Siegfried Linkwitz, we added electronics and turnkey systems to the assortment.

Before SLs passing, he handed me over the “keys” to his loudspeaker business in 2017.
